The ‘CASH Music Scholarship 2010/2011’ for overseas studies, sponsored by the CASH Music Fund and administered by Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd., has been awarded to Chen Yeung Ping. He will be furthering his studies in the doctorate program in composition at the University of California in San Diego, U.S.A.
Chen received his BA (Hons) in Music at the Hong Kong Baptist University. He continued his study in composition with Law Wing Fai and Clarence Mak at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was awarded the Professional Diploma (Composition) in 2008. He is currently a Master of Music (Composition) student at the same school.
In 2009, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music announced an International Call for Duet Compositions for its ‘New Music Week 2009’, and Chen’s work ‘Bie I’, a duet for clarinet and sheng, was one of the selected pieces. In March this year, Chen was invited by the renowned Italian ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi to participate in a Master class in Milan conducted by American composer and Pulitzer Prize winner, David Lang. In coming July, Chen’s commissioned work for the well-known Swiss contemporary music duo UMS ’n JIP, ‘A Silent Tree’, will be premiered at the Festival d’Avignon in France.
