Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Radio 4 hosted the 39th ‘Top 10 Music Headlines,’ inviting music fans to select the top 10 music news from nominated news items based on their cultural value and impact on academic development. This aims to understand the concerns and focus of music fans and professional critics. Selected news items include the following two:
After the passing of Dr Doming Lam, known as ‘The Father of New Music in Hong Kong’ and the recipient of the ‘CASH Hall of Fame Award 1999,’ his descendant donated his extensive archive to The University of Hong Kong (HKU) for research purposes. The collection includes drafts, letters, manuscripts, and other precious memorabilia. Last year, The Department of Music at HKU, Special Collections of HKU Libraries, and HKU MUSE collaborated to curate an exhibition titled ‘Of Roots and Ways: Doming Lam Archive Exhibition,’ showcasing selected treasures from his archive in HKU Libraries. This exhibition provides the general public with a unique glimpse into the contributions of ‘The Father of Hong Kong New Music.’
The ‘CASH Hall of Fame Awards 2024’ were presented to renowned lyricist Poon Wai Yuen and serious music composer Professor David Gwilt respectively in recognition of their remarkable contributions to promoting Hong Kong music. Poon Wai Yuen has written over 1,700 lyrics and collaborated with more than 450 singers, with his classic pieces still widely circulated today. Professor David Gwilt is one of the most influential figures in Hong Kong’s music scene, having held multiple roles as an educator, pianist, composer, radio program host, writer, conductor, judge, and policy maker, making significant contributions to the field of serious music and music education.
