Organised by CASH and partnered with Caritas Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Harmonica Association, the Harmonica Beginner Class was held across seven Caritas’ centres since March, this year, providing children from low-income families with the opportunity to engage with music. The harmonica classes, taught by professional instructors from the Hong Kong Harmonica Association, consisted of four sessions and concluded successfully in May.
The instructors adopted an interactive and step-by-step teaching approach, helping participants learn harmonica playing techniques and basic music knowledge from the ground up. The participants showed great engagement, and by the final session, they were able to play a simple folk song on their own. Two of the centres conducted the classes in a parent-child format, encouraging bonding and communication between parents and children through shared musical experiences. The classes proceeded smoothly, received positive feedback, and successfully brought music into the community.

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Jim Lo (Jim Sir), the ‘Maestro of Hong Kong Lyricism’ on 19 March 2025. It is a huge loss to both the Society and all musicians in the Hong Kong music scene.
Jim Sir’s music career spanned nearly half a century with a repertoire of over 1,000 songs, whose countless classics has touched the hearts of generations of Hong Kong people. He made tremendous contributions to the popular music scene in Hong Kong. His lyrics were popular and resonated deeply with the public, including ‘Hope You Remember Me By Heart’, ‘Every Time When There Is A Change’, ‘It Is Fate That We Met’, ‘The Swordsman Li’, ‘Love Without Flowers Will Bear No Fruits’, ‘Emperor Qin Shi Huang’, ‘The Grace Of Homeland’, ‘Reincarnated’, ‘A Rickshaw Named Dream’, ‘A Rosy Future’ and ‘Tears Shed In The Journey’, etc.
Jim Sir’s lyrics were rich and diverse, showcasing a variety of styles. He was a self-taught lyricist who was extremely serious about his art. For him, lyrics were meant to be aesthetically conceived and conveyed vivid images. He thought of pop lyrics as a form of literature that touched on a much wider array of themes than just romance. He cared about society and longed for his distant homeland, and the combination of this broad vision and his monumental talent provided his lyrics with a timeless quality.
Jim Sir had maintained contact with the Society over the years and spared no effort to support the younger generations. He was honoured by the Society with the ‘CASH Hall of Fame Award’ in 2001.
We will always remember Jim Sir’s significant contribution to the popular song lyrics and Hong Kong music scene. May Jim Sir rest in peace, and we would like to express our deepest condolences to his family.
